But good god, does it punish you often and sometimes without warning. However, the juice is mostly worth the squeeze in Othercide and if you can stick with it long enough to develop a good sense of the mechanics and variety of ways you can use the skill combinations, you’re likely going to find some enjoyment here. A game of this nature simply needs more variety. After the fourth or fifth loss, I knew exactly where enemies would be on the maps that I’d already seen three or four times. Nothing kills the desire to experiment with interesting combos when just “move and attack twice” is easier and more effective by a good margin.įurthermore, the lack of variety in mission design or even mission maps will lead you to start feeling less than excited to keep going time and time again. Playing things interestingly just doesn’t do enough extra damage or effects to warrant the effort. Instead, the best way to get ahead is just to play safe, delay opponents, and use your most basic abilities. It’d be really fun to set up intricate combos and manipulate the timeline, but the reward is not worth the risk and cost. Othercide’s systems have so much potential in them, but they fall so short because of these few design oversights. And this got immensely dull and grindy very quickly. All the intricate combos you can perform hinge on these conditional triggers, so instead of doing anything interesting? I just found myself playing safe and utilising basic AP consuming attacks. Unless you’re going to take more damage than it would cost to use a reaction to negate it, there’s very little point to actually doing this. Still, fans of tactical RPGs will likely find it engaging and the unique elements make it worth, if nothing else, another go, just don’t expect the most complicated experience around.Įnemy damage can be pretty high, so you’re encouraged to avoid taking it. It would be nice if the mechanics were deeper or there was more to the experience than punishing mechanics, though there really isn’t. For most this will be enough to drive the experience forward, ultimately to the boss or another cycle that will end with a final confrontation. Those able to plan accordingly will likely suffer fewer losses than reckless players, though there is always an element of luck that comes into play. So much of Othercide hinges on how well you handle rogue-lite elements. Boasting sacrifice, horrors, and difficulty, is it hard to put down or just hard to pick up? Following a similar path if Othercide, a weird and interesting take on the tactical RPG genre with roguelike elements. Regardless of where you fall in the debate, using these ideas to create a nice experience has also lead to a lot of success, with titles like Darkest Dungeon doing extremely well. Both offering different takes on ever-changing and constantly engaging mechanics, the typically esoteric and difficult games have quickly won a lot of people over. As a result, the roguelike and rogue-lite genres have really come into their own. Replayability and skill have been something of an important talking point in the gaming community. You are going to be playing a long, hard, and tactical game with this one. It is starkly grey scale, black and white, with splashes of colour and brings to mind the stylings of certain anime shows. The aesthetic of this game is brilliant in that way. It challenges you in a fundamental way, to battle hideous monsters and fight revulsion of the evil that it portrays on screen.
